The Gambia, Africa
Situated on the Atlantic coast, The Gambia is the smallest country in Africa. If you picked up a travel book of The Gambia, you would likely see beautiful beaches and small resorts, but what you wouldn’t see is the poverty laying beyond the tourist traps. Despite the presence of the Gambia river which runs through the middle of the country, only one-sixth of the land is arable. Well over half the population lives below United Nations poverty line, working small plots of land, relying on their own produce to survive.
