HATN projects that have been completed
Quelcata is situated in the Bolivian mountains. At 13,000 feet of elevation the living conditions are very difficult. The school was dangerously close to collapse and the health of the community was impacted by a lack of nutritious foods and a lack of latrines. HATN built a new three-room school and provided educational materials (above).
A lack of latrines was a serious risk to the health of the community but how do you provide plumbing at this elevation and when water is in short supply? HATN worked with the community to install 21 dry composting latrines (above). Composing toilets, together with a secondary composting step produces a humus-like end product that the villagers use to fertilize their green houses.
Small in-ground greenhouses (above) provide a hospitable environment for growing vegetables during the cold winter months. Built as a community effort to give families the nutrition they badly need, the gardens are expanded during the warmer months to provide crops for sale at local markets.
