HATN Micronutrient Program

UPDATED – November 16, 2015 – Many of the children we see in Mali are extremely malnourished. Vitamin and Mineral deficiencies put them at great risk of developing disease or disabilities, or premature death.

In February 2015, HATN and TEGEW started a micronutrient fortification program in Mana and several surrounding villages. Currently 494 children from 7 villages are enrolled.

MixMe is a micronutrient fortification powder that is mixed with regular food. It provides supplemental iron, vitamins A, B, C, D, E, copper, selenium, iodine and zinc, to children who are not getting enough of these nutrients in their diets. The supplementation is particularly important after the rainy/malaria  season as even previously healthy children are apt to deteriorate during this period.

TEGEW volunteer, Baraye Sow is overseeing the program while Dr. Maurice Diallo, Nurse Seydou Ballo and Midwife Ramatoulaye Sangaré are responsible for assessing children and monitoring their care. Parents and children need to learn about healthy food choices so that they will  continue to grow strong after they have finished the program protocol. Our Health Team is currently preparing  nutrition education programs that Dr. Maurice will present to the families.

The feedback on the children has been encouraging so far – Dr. Maurice reports that he is seeing positive growth, weigh gain and energy improvement in the children following the protocol. Children from two additional villages are waiting to start the program when additional supplies become available.

Thank-you to all of our supporters who have provided funds for the purchase of the MixMe Micronutrients.

You are making a huge positive influence on the lives of these children!
