Where in the world? Bolivia, South America
When? August 2016
Who? 10 Canadians + MANOS Bolivia team
What Project? Partnership with the “Fundación Kumi”
Fundación Kumi in a Bolivian charity located in Cochabamba that helps children from low-income families by providing a safe space to do their homework, eat, obtain medical attention and just be kids. Kumi was founded by a couple who saw the need in their community and wanted to help the children. They rely solely on donations – they do not receive government funding.
HATN partnered with Kumi to focus on infrastructure. The team repaired the outdoor space to allow the children to play outside in a space, clean space. We repaired the exterior walls, paved a cement pad, installed playground equipment and painted the area. We also built new benches to use in the classrooms.
The team also assisted with repairing the water pump and building a storage unit for the pump system.
During the HATN visit, we coordinated a visit by a doctor to provide free checkups for the children and answer medical questions. Our volunteers also led nutrition seminars with the children to teach healthy eating habits.
